BIDCO SCOOPS TOP ENERGY MANAGEMENT AWARD

Bidco Oil Refineries Ltd scooped the First Runners up position for the top award during the KAM annual Energy Management Award (EMA) 2007 edition. The top award went to the government – owned Pan – African Paper Mills. The announcement was made at a colorful Energy Management Award Gala dinner held on 30th May at the Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy Mr. Patrick Nyoike, was the chief guest. Bidco has implemented a number of high and low investment projects as well as institutionalize energy Management System for Sustainability. Bidco also recovers heat from flash steam and furnace grating and uses it to preheat boiler feed water. Through the implementation of Gemba Kaizen, the company has applied measures to control rates of material dosage for its soap plant, yielding a 5% reduction in rejection rate. As a result, Bidco also scooped the Energy Innovation Award, with Pan paper coming in as first runners up. In the Fuel savings category, Bidco Oil Refineries was first runners up for major improvements in boiler efficiency, steam utilization, and fuel substitution (fossil to agri-waste). The category was won by Unilever Kenya Pan paper scooped the top award for generating its own electricity through the blow heat recovery project which recovers heat from wood chip digesters, securing huge savings for the company. The company has also implemented both high and low investments as well as institutionalized energy management system for sustainability. The Electricity Savings award went to PZ Cussons which was followed immediately by Unilever Kenya as first runner up and Tononoka Steel as second runner up. In the Service Sector category, Turtle Bay bounced back to reclaim the top award which it first won in 2004, followed by the Nairobi Hospital as first runner up and Sarova White sands as second runner up. The Nakuru-based Spin Knit Limited won the Best Energy Management Team award, followed by Cook ‘N Lite as first runner up. The Energy Management Award is an annual event which recognizes enterprises that have achieved outstanding energy savings and cost reduction through energy efficiency and conservation initiatives.
