Bidco Gets Fortification Certificate

Bidco Uganda Ltd has received vitamin fortification certificate from Uganda National Bureau of standards (UNBS). The certification follows a thorough examination by UNBS carried out at Bidco’s state of the art factory in Jinja which confirmed that Bidco’s Golden Fry and Ufuta edible oil products were being fortified with Vitamin A for the benefit of the consumers. The certificate now allows Bidco to use the fortification mark on its products.

Fortification is the adding of essential vitamins and minerals to foods that are regularly consumed by a significant proportion of the population. Cooking oil is one such product that is consumed regularly thereby providing and efficient vehicle of delivering vitamins to majority of people especially in the rural areas.

Product fortification is tailored at countering vitamin deficiency which affects many people in sub Saharan countries Uganda included. “By fortifying our products with vitamins A, we are helping counter many cases of micronutrient deficiency which has many invisible social-economic effects like underdeveloped brains among children and lack of sufficient energy among the working age population” Commented Mr. Kodey Rao the Managing Director Bidco Uganda Ltd.

Bidco’s highly advanced factory offers many opportunities for developing high quality products that can be tailored to deliver added benefits to the community. Fortification is one such way of providing the consumer with such added benefits. For example fortification helps Uganda fight brain impairment among many growing children effectively improving the national IQ for the country.

Fortification is also a very effective tool of improving national energies, intellects productivity and growth. Many countries in Europe have used fortification to protect their populations form more than forty years now. “By running the latest technology edible oil refinery in Uganda, we are technologically capable of putting in place programs and systems that will ensure that our fortified products are of the highest quality possible.” Added Mr Rao.

According to UNICEF, Vitamin A helps strengthen the immune system of young children thereby preventing many premature deaths. In practice, vitamin and mineral deficiencies overlap and interact. Half of children with Vitamins deficiencies are suffering from multiple deficiencies – adding up an immeasurable burden on individuals, on health services, on education systems, and on millions of families caring for children who are disabled or mentally impaired.
